8. Council Tool 38PE136FG Pulaski Fire Axe; Fiberglass Handle
Feature
This 3.75 lb. Pulaski Axe from Council Tool has a forged steel head that is a traditional single bit axe blade on one end and a mattock blade for digging or grubbing on the other end. Thought to have been developed in the early 1900's by Edward Pulaski, a legendary Forest Service Ranger in Idaho, it is said that in August, 1910 his presence saved the lives of 45 men during a difficult time in a large fire. While ANSI Standards call for bit hardness of Rc 45-60, at least 1/2 inch back from the cutting edge, Council Tool internal standards call for tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55 and targets 1-1/4 inches from the cutting edge.
The 36" long yellow clad style fiberglass handle has the traditional double bit shape, and it is extremely strong, non-conductive and non-corrosive. The handle has a pultruded structural fiberglass core with an injection molded outer jacket made from a tough, durable engineered polymer.
The axe head is joined to the handle with a strong, resilient epoxy, which forms both a chemical and mechanical bond. The interior detail of the eye is tapered to provide an additional strong mechanical bond. The axe body is coated with red enamel and the cutting edge in clear lacquer to deter rust, then the edge is hand sharpened to make it ready for use. Made in the USA.
